Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) star Brittney Griner personally reached out to United States President Joe Biden to urge him to help her get out of Russian custody.

In a handwritten letter delivered to the White House on July 4, parts of which were made public, Griner said she was "terrified I might be here forever."

"I realize you are dealing with so much, but please don’t forget about me and the other American Detainees," Griner, 31, wrote.

"Please do all you can to bring us home. I voted for the first time in 2020 and I voted for you. I believe in you. I still have so much good to do with my freedom that you can help restore," Griner further wrote.

It is unknown if Biden has read the letter.

Russian authorities detained Griner in February over alleged possession of vape cartridges containing hashish oil, which is illegal in Russia.

Griner, a center for Phoenix Mercury, was in Russia to play for Russian professional women's team UMMC Ekaterinburg during the WNBA's offseason.

On July 1, Griner appeared in person in a courtroom in Khimki, a suburb of Moscow, marking the first day of her trial, ABC News reported.

The next hearing is scheduled for July 7.

Griner faces up to 10 years in prison. Her detention in Russia was extended to Dec. 20.

National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a statement that the U.S. government "continues to work aggressively — using every available means — to bring her home."

Watson added that the Biden administration was in "regular contact" with Griner's family.
